Most common single garage door sizes
Clopay’s buying guide describes 8 ft × 7 ft and 9 ft × 7 ft as the two most common single-car sizes, noting that 9 ft widths are popular in newer homes for the extra clearance. Single doors are widely available from 8 to 10 ft wide, and 8 ft heights are a common upgrade.

Nominal sizes (width × height). In the US the nominal size normally equals the finished opening.
Choosing a width: 8, 9 or 10 feet?
Width is usually the bigger comfort factor. A door that technically fits your car body can still be awkward if mirrors, a curved driveway or a tight turn into the garage leave little margin.
| Width | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft (96″) | Compact and midsize cars; older homes | Limited mirror room for wide SUVs and trucks |
| 9 ft (108″) | Most cars and many SUVs | Full-size trucks with large towing mirrors |
| 10 ft (120″) | Pickups, vans, angled approaches | Needs a wider opening and header |

Choosing a height: 7 or 8 feet?
Seven feet has long been the default residential height. An 8 ft door gives room for roof boxes, bike racks, lifted trucks and some vans. A taller door needs a taller opening and enough interior headroom for the track — check our clearance guide before planning a height change.
Oversized single and 1.5-car doors
Doors around 10–12 ft wide are often called “1.5-car” doors. They suit a car plus a motorcycle or ride-on mower, or simply more space to walk around a vehicle. A 12 ft door can sometimes take two very small vehicles, but it isn’t a true two-car door.
Single doors outside the US
In the UK, common single up-and-over sizes are 7′ × 6′6″ (2134 × 1981 mm) and 7′ × 7′. Australian builders commonly use 2400 mm × 2100 mm openings. See the regional size table for more.

Frequently asked questions
Is an 8 ft wide single door big enough?
It fits many cars, but it leaves limited room for mirrors and for wider SUVs or pickups. Many newer homes use 9 ft widths for extra margin. Measure your vehicle including mirrors before deciding.
What is a 1.5-car garage door?
It is an informal term for an oversized single door, typically around 10–12 ft wide, used for a car plus a motorcycle, mower or extra walking room.
Should I choose a 7 ft or 8 ft high door?
7 ft is the long-standing standard height. 8 ft adds room for taller vehicles, roof racks and lifted trucks, but needs a taller opening and enough headroom inside.
