Nominal size vs. actual size
In the US, a “9 × 7” door is designed for a finished opening 9 ft wide and 7 ft high. The door panel itself overlaps the stops slightly. Always measure your opening rather than relying on the old door’s label — see how to measure a garage door.
RV garage door sizes
RV doors are extended-height products, and the right size depends on your motorhome or trailer. The sizes below are illustrative starting points; our RV door guide explains how to measure an RV including rooftop equipment.
| Size (W × H) | Millimetres | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10′ × 12′ | 3048 × 3658 | Narrow RV opening; suits smaller campers and vans. Check mirror width. |
| 12′ × 12′ | 3658 × 3658 | Often discussed as a starting point for Class C motorhomes. |
| 12′ × 14′ | 3658 × 4267 | Extra height for taller motorhomes and roof equipment. |
| 14′ × 14′ | 4267 × 4267 | Wider opening for easier alignment when reversing. |
| 12′ × 16′ | 3658 × 4877 | Very tall opening for large Class A motorhomes or fifth-wheels. |
RV doors are usually special-order, extended-height products. Size from your own RV measurements.

UK and Australian garage door sizes
“Standard” means something different in each market. UK suppliers still use imperial ordering codes such as 7′ × 6′6″ (2134 × 1981 mm) for up-and-over doors, while Australian residential doors are commonly built around 2400 × 2100 mm openings and made to measure.
| Market | Single | Double | How sizes are expressed |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States / Canada | 8′ × 7′ or 9′ × 7′ (approx. 2.44 × 2.13 m / 2.74 × 2.13 m) | 16′ × 7′ (approx. 4.88 × 2.13 m) | Feet and inches; nominal sizes match the rough opening. |
| United Kingdom | 7′ × 6′6″ (2134 × 1981 mm) and 7′ × 7′ (2134 × 2134 mm), up-and-over | 14′ × 7′ (approx. 4267 × 2134 mm) | Imperial ordering codes with metric frame sizes; frame and sub-frame add to overall size. |
| Australia | 2400 mm wide × 2100 mm high | 4800 mm wide × 2100 mm high | Metric; most doors are made to measure. |
Nominal ordering sizes. UK up-and-over frames add to the overall size; Australian doors are typically made to measure.
How to read garage door size codes
- US format: width first, then height — “16 × 7” or “16′ × 7′”.
- UK up-and-over codes: manufacturers such as Garador use four-digit codes like 7066, meaning 7′0″ wide × 6′6″ high (internal frame size 2134 × 1981 mm).
- Metric: usually width × height in millimetres; check whether the figure refers to the opening, the door curtain or the overall frame.

Frequently asked questions
Are the sizes in the chart exact?
They are nominal sizes. In the US the nominal door size usually matches the finished rough opening; actual door panels and frames vary slightly by manufacturer.
Why do UK sizes look different?
UK up-and-over doors are commonly ordered by imperial codes such as 7′ × 6′6″ (2134 × 1981 mm), and the frame adds to the overall size. Roller and sectional doors are usually made to measure in millimetres.
Can I order a size that isn't in the chart?
Often yes. Some manufacturers offer custom widths in small increments and extended heights; availability depends on the model and dealer.
